A deeper look at Need and Want

                                                                                                 week 12 (save $12)

Do we really have a clear understanding of what our needs and wants are?  It’s such a blurry area and do we use it as an excuse to justify our bad purchasing habits?

Need- something you have to have
Want -something you would like to have

Our basic needs to live consist of shelter, food, water, and clothing but our circumstances with our needs may change as our lives change with illness, divorce, retirement, etc.

Everything else that’s beyond our basic needs that makes our lives more enjoyable and comfortable is a wantThey can be things we love to have, believe we cannot live without or even things we don’t have the money to buy it.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with wanting to buy "extra things".  Life is to be lived and not survived.  When you can afford the things you want, do treat yourself along the way.  Just remember not to sink yourself financially in debt just to maintain things that you want...then there is a problem.

The next time you buy something, just ask yourself if it’s something you really need or want.  You may realize a majority of things are nothing but just wants.  This could be an eye opener for making better future spending choices and focusing on what is important...and it just might save you some extra cash in the long run!

  1. Haha, that's a funny picture. Ingenious.

You make some valid points here Jay Cee. We live in such a consumerist society where many of us fall into the bad habit of engaging in rabid spending without thinking of the consequences; using credit card on top of credit card to make purchases that we don't even need. Who doesn't want to enjoy the luxury of nice things? I suppose it comes down to self-restraint and making better financial choices as you suggest here. I have gotten better over the years at saying NO to splurging on clothes and shoes (Jimmy Choos are so hard to resist!). My husband is a lot more frugal than me and every time I come home with a new blouse or shoes, he tends to give me the evil eye. We aren't in serious debut or anything of the sort but there are times when I know that I shouldn't buy something but do so anyways because the "need" is too strong to resist.

  2. Best summed up by Carrie Bradshaw (Sex and the City), " I like my money right where I can see it - hanging in my closet ".
